The group of Chemical-Environmental and Sanitary Engineering works with the development, design and management of advanced technological systems and processes for treatment and valorization of urban and industrial wastewater and of liquid and solid wastes.

The main research topics are:

  • Design, operation and optimization of innovative wastewater treatment processes directed towards the circular economy concept: convert waste streams into value streams
  • Nutrients recovery
  • Energy production
  • Bioplastics production
  • Carbon and environmental footprint measurement and reduction
  • Treatment of supernatant from anaerobic digestion for nutrients removal or recovery and bioplastics production
  • Occurrence and removal of emerging contaminants during waste and wastewater treatment processes

Laboratory of Chemical-Environmental and Sanitary Engineering

The laboratory and the pilot experimental facilities support the research, development, design and management of advanced and innovative technological systems and processes for the treatment and enhancement, with a view to circular economy, of urban and industrial wastewater and of waste liquids and solids, with particular reference to the organic fraction. The instrumentation present in the laboratory, in continuous modernization according to the national and international financed projects, allows for waste and waste: the analytical determination of the main organic and inorganic contaminants; the functional characterization, chemical-physical and respirometric, for the study and optimization of treatment and enhancement processes; bench-scale test and experimentation of innovative biological and chemical-physical processes.

Available instrumentation: Ion chromatography with autosamplers for ionic and metal forms, ICP plasma instrumentation, automatic pH meter / titration, Spectrophotometer, Centrifuge, Dryers, Distillators, Thermoreactors, Jar Test Equipment, Automatic Respirometer, Digester, Multiparameter online probes, Measurement system of biomethanation potential.

Pilot and Demo Hall of Chemical-Environmental and Sanitary Engineering

The pilot-hall managed and coordinated by the Chemical-Environmental and Sanitary Engineering Group of the SIMAU Department is spread over about 200 m2 and consists of an area where experimental / demonstration pilot plants are located, a container office, a warehouse container and a technical workshop. The research, development and testing platform is located inside the urban wastewater treatment plant of Falconara Marittima (Ancona) and allows to operate and validate eco-innovative solutions in real conditions. The platform allows to carry out research and development activities at the highest technology readiness level (TRL). The area, in fact, is equipped with pilot scale and demonstration plants for the advanced treatment of wastewater and / or non-hazardous liquid waste (anaerobic digestion, dewatering, diathermic oil evaporator, ultrafiltration membrane, reverse osmosis membrane, membrane with direct osmosis, continuous biological sector or automatically controlled SBR, measurement of greenhouse gases and gaseous emissions with online analyzer, advanced dynamic separation, UASB / EGBR and Anaerobic Membrane BioReactor, UV and activated carbon, fermentation units, standard oxygen transfer yield measurement systems). The electromechanical and electrical equipment of the experimental platform have been designed, selected and installed in order to obtain validated and solid results for the reliable following scale-up to real plants. The platform is constantly evolving and modernized according to R&D&I projects funded by public or private bodies or companies. It is equipped with  systems for real-time monitoring liquid and gaseous streams for the quantification of the impacts of the processes studied. The area is, to date, a validation platform where relevant local, national and international projects (e.g. Horizon2020) are carried out (e.g. www.smart-plant.eu; www.intcatch.eu; www.enerwater.eu). Finally, the pilot and demo hall is an attractive hand-on opportunity to train young water and waste professional within pre and post graduate internships.
