Tourism in Ancona

Ancona is a city on Italy’s Adriatic coast and the capital of the Marche region. Ancona was funded by Greek settlers coming from the South of Italy in about 387 BC, who gave it its name: Ancona stems from the Greek word Ἀγκών (Ankṓn), meaning “elbow”, and this name is related to the shape of the territory. The city is known for its beaches, such as Passetto Beach, and the hilltop Cathedral of San Ciriaco. In the city center, the Fontana del Calamo is a fountain with bronze masks of mythic figures. In the port are the ancient Arch of Trajan and the Lazzaretto, or Mole Vanvitelliana, an 18th-century pentagonal quarantine station on its own island.

Monte Conero is a promontory situated on the south of Ancona. Here, the “Riviera del Conero” offers over 20 km of coastline and numerous blue-flag beaches, a promontory overlooking the sea that gives rise to caves, coves and creeks in between the white rock and vegetation of Conero Regional Park. Relaxing hills and quaint medieval villages offer an opportunity to relax as well as enjoy unique thrills and experiences on a sensory itinerary among traditions, art and flavors of the past.
