Chemical Environmental and Sanitary Engineering

The research area focuses on water cycles manly related to wastes and wastewater. As concern wastewater treatment, innovative processes are developing for the removal of the main macro and micro pollutants, for resource and energy recovery and valorisation and for energetic and environmental upgrading and monitoring of the processes.
Regarding waste applications, innovative activities are developing for treatment and valorisation of solid and liquid wastes.

The main activities in which the research area is involved are:

Study and development of eco-innovative and sustainable solutions for resource recovery from wastewater

Development and application of eco-innovative and energetically efficient solutions to upgrade wastewater treatment plants and to close the circular value chain, applying low carbon emission techniques, supporting the recovery of valuable products and materials. Solutions are developed enhancing the issues regarding automation, energy efficiency and gas emission reduction. Materials, that could be recovered, include biopolymers, cellulose, nutrients and fertilizers.

Development of innovative and digital solutions to support integrated approach of WATER-ENERGY NEXUS

The activity focus on supporting and combining innovative solutions to minimize impacts on surface water bodies, also through the development of integrated treatments and ICT monitoring strategies. These solutions allow the reduction of the impacts and/or the related risk for the improvement of the water quality also for bathing and/or reuse. Developed solutions are implemented also for the management of secondary flows such as overflows from combined sewage systems.
